The Do’s and Don’ts of Throwing a Kid’s Birthday Party

You want your child to have very fond memories of their birthday party. If you’re overwhelmed, just follow these birthday party do’s and don’ts.

Throwing a birthday party comes easier for some parents than others.

Between knowing how many people to invite, what food to serve, or even where to host it, there is a lot to think about. But, the process doesn’t have to be stressful!

Whether you’re hosting a backyard barbecue or hiring a kid’s play venue, the basic do’s and don’ts are the same.

Here’s everything you need to guide you through your party planning process.

The Do’s

Try not to think so much about what you might mess up.

Instead, focus on all the great memories you’ll create! These are the top three things every child’s party needs.

Send Out Invitations

Are you having a quiet gathering with a few of your young one’s favorite play dates? Or is this the year you invite their whole class?

No matter the number of people you hope to attend, opt for paper invitations. Digital invites will get lost in a parent’s inbox – or worse, their spam.

Plus, paper is more thoughtful.

It allows you to create memories with your child before their birthday party even starts. Together, the two of you can pick out the paper, plan what to say, and put everything in envelopes.

Get (Enough) Food

Be sure to leave an RSVP date on the invites so you can get a headcount.

Headcounts help you understand how much food to plan for.

But, it’s always better to have a little more food than you need than a little less. This isn’t extra spending – it’s leftovers you and your family can enjoy, or donate!

Think of the time of day you’re hosting the party, too. This will determine if the food is a meal, like hamburgers and hotdogs, or more of snack items for kids to munch on.

Consider getting a few special snacks for adults to make them feel included.

Also, ask about allergies!

Decorate

Every party always has some form of invitation and at least a few sodas to serve.

What some people forget, though, are the decorations. Decorations are what make your birthday party come to life, which means they are a necessity.

You’ll need special custom balloons, streamers, and maybe even party hats. Consider having a photo booth with props or posters of characters who fit the theme.

If possible, your invites should match the theme as well.

The Don’ts

Although the secret to a great birthday party is all in the things you should do, there are a few things to watch out for.

Feel Like You Have to Invite the Whole Class

Some schools have policies on inviting the whole class or at least all the boys/girls.

This can create more pressure than necessary.

If you would much rather host a small party, host the small party. Just hand out the invitations to your child’s close friends outside of school.

Go Crazy with the Goody Bags

Goody bags used to be a big hit at birthday parties.

But, kids have so much these days that they don’t really need much. Instead of buying toys and small gifts, opt for something homemade.

Bake hand-held sweet treats like muffins or cookies. Or, fill small bags with a bit of candy and a thank-you card.

These are small, simple gestures that go a long way.
